Taxpayers prompted to file their 2013 Self Assessment Tax Return

27 Dec 2013

Those filing a Self Assessment Tax Return online for the 2012/13 tax year must send the relevant documents to HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) by midnight on 31 January 2014.

Individuals who file their tax returns late will be liable to pay a penalty, with very few exceptions being made to this rule.

Those who fail to pay on time will receive an automatic penalty of £100 and will then be charged £10 for each subsequent day the Return remains unfiled, for up to a maximum of 90 days. These penalties stand even if the taxpayer owes no tax or has already paid HMRC.

Additional penalties will be incurred if the Returns still have not been filed after six and 12 months and there are also charges for the late payment of tax.
